What Would You Have Done?

(Updated Thursday, 6/15...scroll to bottom of post for Part Deux)

I don't think I ask for a lot from the Husband. I really don't.

I ask that he puts the toliet seat down so that if I have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, I won't fall into the toliet.

I ask that he helps me remember to keep hand towels in our bathroom, and that further, he picks up his boxer shorts after he showers so that we don't repeat the embarrasment of having a guest stoop down to the floor to pick up what they think is a towel, only to find out they are about to wipe their face with Husband's dirty shorts.

I ask that when I say to him, for the first time ever, "Honey, do you want to read one of my blog posts?", that he at least feigns interest rather than merely skimming it quickly and then saying, "Is THIS what you do all day?"

And finally, I ask that when I call him at home on his day off and ask him to bring Little Guy to my office so that I can introduce him to my co-workers, that he will dress our babe in attire fitting the occasion.

I expect this because I have clearly specified the type of outfit that I want Little Guy to wear--an outfit appropriately cute and fairly conservative....something fitting for a visit to a government office where he will meet his mother's co-workers for the first time ever and charm them with his dimples and chin rolls. I expect he will be wearing a plaid romper with a color-coordinated onesie underneath or maybe denim shortalls layered with a Baby Gap tee, or perhaps even his striped seersucker. I expect this because these are the outfits that I have offered as examples of how he should come dressed.
However, this is what he arrived wearing.

If you're wondering, that is the Virgin Mary on the front of his shirt. This is a Mexican outfit that my brother bought for my son on Olvera Street. It's a great outfit. A beautiful outfit. An outfit that shows off Little Guy's Mexican and religious heritage all at once! But not at all what I had pictured Little Guy wearing when I walked him through cubicleland to meet my co-workers. Call me a conformist, but I just wanted him to show up in a frickin plaid jumper with a pair of Robeez on, damnit!

So I ask you. What would you have done in this situation?

a) Tell Husband to take Little Guy home, change him into his plaid jumper, and bring him back to the office.

b) Take Little Guy through cubicleland with the Virgin Mary outfit on. Screw anyone who tries to make fun of him!

c) Kick Husband's ass.

d) A & C

e) Other (please describe)

You tell me what you would have done, and then I'll tell you what I did.

*********************************************
Edited to add: OK, so this is what happened...

When I saw what Little Guy was wearing, I was pretty peeved. The extent of my irritation almost made me implement Choice "A." However, I knew we didn't have time for that, which made me even MORE peeved. So peeved, in fact, that I immediately began implementing Choice "C".

But before I could get a really good kick in, Husband pulled a back-up outfit out of the diaper bag. Apparently, he knew I might get be reluctant to show Little Guy off in the Virgin Mary outfit...(again, great outfit, but wrong occasion)...so he packed away another outfit just in case.

I felt just a wee bit bad as I changed Little Guy into the cookie-cutter prepster jumper, but that's what I did.

The way I figure it: Little Guy is due for a visit to Husband's office real soon. And I have just the outfit for him to wear...

I would have just taken him around and showed him to everyone anyway because he is a beautiful little boy!!! we all know husbands have no clue about dressing kids. But your little boy is absolutely gorgeous, he would look like a doll in anything.

For a second, I thought your Husband dressed him up like Elvis, and then I would've definitely kicked his ass! But seriously, I agree with the first comment, most Daddy's haven't a fashion clue when it comes to kids clothes, and most Mommies know it!

Just make sure to bring him back on a day you have off, dressed in his cute khakis and polo onesie! :)

I would of said, hunny that is not what I asked you to put him in and then I would of taken him around and showed him off. He's a cutie and a "baby." If your co-worker care that much about what a baby is wearing than you must be working with some snobs.LOL

I would kick his ass for not following instructions, but I seriously love this outfit! He's beautiful!

The ever-popular B&C for me please.

But the "So THIS is what you do all day?" comment - a serious bout of (c) for that one! (and this from someone who has been obliquely inviting hubby to visit her blog for a few days now, with no result)

Put me down for B&C as well please. I also agree that you should bring baby back in a really cute Mommy approved outfit one day! :) AND I'll bet you a $100, the amt of your last Target shopping trip, that nobody even noticed what baby was wearing. He is SOOOO sweet and cute that it probably didn't even register with your co-workers what he was wearing, just that a cutie pie was in their midst. Ya know? I stress about what my kids are wearing all the time too and if I mention it to somebody else later on they always go, "oh, I didn't even notice what he had ON. I just noticed his beautiful dimples or the fact that he told me that funny story". Then I think, oh, you mean you noticed his wit and personality, not his 3-year-old shorts that look like somebody used them to clean the car with?? COOL! You know what I mean!??! So, anyways, DON'T stress. And Little Guy is TOOOO cute for words, even if he was only in a diaper and 2 mismatched flip flops, which is what my husband use to dress our kids in as babies and I would be MORTIFIED. :)

awwwww he's so adorable in that outfit! and i would answer all of the above hehehehe.

I know what you mean about the part you ask him to at least feign interest to see what we created. But thankfully mine is not a problem.

I know your site from kidzoo. Hugs

B and as for the others...
Like C???
Do you think the hubby would listen??? Since he has not heard any of the other requests???
I think he your son that is so sooooooooo cute... that if the co workers noticed anything other that that killer smile and those dimples, they have something terribly, terribly, wrong with them...
And at least the clothes matched...
and he remembered the diaper bag...
and by the way...
I could not stop laughing...
At least, through your blog, I have learntthat I am not alone... And honey... aren't we just living the DREAM???

Awwww. You guys are just too sweet! I am going to tell the Hubs that you liked the outfit. He will be happy. Maybe he will even decide to check out my blog. :)

I am LMFAO, because this is exactly, and I mean EXACTLY what my husband would have done.

I would have paraded him around the office, using the opportunity to get as many jabs in at my husband's expense as humanly possible.

B. Totally. Who cares what the child is wearing when he is so darned cute?

Although I feel your pain. You should see some of the combos that Kyle thought were perfectly acceptable. I think your husband really tried to find something special for your little guy to wear. His heart was in the right place.

My God, babies don't get much cuter than Little Guy!

I would have shown him arround and when I got weird looks explain who it was that did the dressing. Totally let the husband take credit for the choice in attire.

I couldn't comment on your last post because you had so many frickin comments the page wouldn't fully load!!

The pool is so cute. You haaaaaad to get it. I got one from Target last year that blows up as an elephant and has a sprinkler in the tail. It is to die for.

I LOOOOOOOOVE Target. I easily drop $100 there every time.

e) I think I would have put a post-it note on Little Guy's shirt saying "Daddy dressed me today." Then? Proudly passed him around the office. The cuteness far outweighs the outfit.

One more tick in the B&C column.

For the record, Steve once dressed Josie in two shirts. One of them worn correctly, the other as pants. The guy had spent the afternoon mystified as to what the extra hole in the crotch was for and why the waistband was so loose.

Oh my goodness, LOL. I have to say Little Guy looks kinda like a Christmas tree. The outfit doesn't look very fitting for, um, JUNE. Your husband is such a man! I would not have done any of those options, if I were really upset with how he dressed him I would have announced, to everyone that met Little Guy that Daddy was the one to dress him because anyone in their right mind wouldn't have picked that outfit for the office. I probably would have added some comment about garanimal tags that will be placed on all his existing clothing. No matter though Little Guy is a doll, I'm sure everyone loved him.

I would have taken him around anyways - I actually like the outfit, myself. (And I'm with Rose - screw the office snobs!)

Also, I'll bet your husband has been reading your blog all along but won't admit it. Try posting something juicy, like, "Does My Husband Know I'm Really A Stripper?" and see if he can contain himself.

Definitely B and then C later.

But he really looks adorable in that outfit. I do get wanting something a little bit more... um... standard, but he could be wearing pink pajamas and still look great.

Just B. You can get your revenge later when you select your attire for Hubby's workplace holiday party.

Besides, I also work in a government office and in my experience those cubicle women could stand to shake up their clothing choices.

OMG. Too funny. Our husband's could probably be twins, as I have fallen into the toilet one too many times, and I have picked up my daughter from the babysitter in outfits that are unbecoming a lady (it's his responsiblity to dress her in the morning).

My answer?

I wouldn't probably walked him around in what he had on. It's quite cute really. At first, I thought it might be an Elvis outfit Could've penciled in some side burns and given him your shades.

Love your blog.

I am overwhelmed by the niceness of all your comments....I don't think a one of you said that I should simply have kicked the Hubster's ass. That is really kind. As, of course, were all the comments about Little Guy. You guys are so sweet!

Ok really he looks so darn cute!!!! Really I would have had my husband carry him from place to place, while I chatted and beamed!

I never worry about what my husband dresses my daughter in anymore or how he does her hair. I KNOW the women that see them KNOW he did it himself and that counts for something!

I just gotta ask this. If he thought that the outfit might be a wrong choice, at least enough that he brought a spare, WHY DID HE DRESS THE KID IN THE FIRST ONE ANYWAY!?!?

5:54 AM
Blogger Mom O Matic said...

I thought he was dressed like Elvis too! But I have to say I get a kick out of crazy kids outfits. I don't mind if my son's hair sticks straight up and he's got punk clothes on. BUT mismatched outfits, dresses on BACKWARDS on my daughter. And I'm like "Did you even try?" to my husband.

I like your blog! Come by and visit sometime we can talk trash!

Stephanie: yes, good question. Well, at first I thought he brought the spare outfit b/c he meant the whole thing as a joke, but when I asked him about it yesterday he said that he brought the spare outfit cuz he knew I would probably be mad that he didn't "follow my instructions" about how to dress him, and he didn't want his ass kicked. Sooooo, Husband appears to like to torture me just a little, but he also fears my wrath enough not to take it TOO far. I think that is very wise of him. VERY wise. he he

Lotta and Baby and Mom: thanks for visiting here. I will stop by your place to say hi. Cheers!

Domesticator: shouldn't you be sipping wine on the Tuscan countryside right now or are you back home?

If I had been working in your office I don't think I would have even noticed the outfit because of all the overwhelming, in your face, oh-my-GAWD!, cuteness.

You could always put him in a t-shirt that says "my mom digs chicks" and post it on your blog and then wait and see if your husband notices. That would be fun.
