I've Got Nothing Against the Virgin Mary:
Just Don't Put Her on a Hat

Now, I am not one to begrudge anyone for having a picture of the Virgin Mary in their home. I come from a Catholic family. Growing up, my relatives had pictures of Jesus all over their house. My grandmother kept holy water in little plastic Virgin Mary bottles in her dresser drawer. I'm used to seeing this stuff. And it's all good with me.

Unless...

it's on tacky clothing or a tattoo. That's where I draw the line.

I just don't think that's cool. I don't want to see Jesus's mother on the forearm of some dude scanning my groceries at the market, you know? Nor do I want to see it on a t-shirt. I don't know why, but I just find it tasteless.

And yet, for some reason Husband (who normally has a conservative sense of style, shops at Nordstrom, and owns more shoes than I do) happens to think that clothing and accessories with the Virgin Mary on them are "cool".

Lest you think I jest, let me show you what he brought home last night from the local Stop and Rob.

After showing it to me, he put it on, and sliding his fingers over the brim, actually said: "Now this is style. I'm gonna pop it out by wearing it with a pink shirt."

And he was not joking.

Lord, help me.

Random Question: Is anyone having trouble loading my blog by any chance? Janet e-mailed me to say she was having difficulty. She's on Firefox. Just wondering if others are having issues with their browsers. And on that note, does it take forever for my blog to load for you? I'm wondering if my page is too graphic heavy.

Lol...okay, I'm not a catholic myself, however, I totally get the tacky and tasteless thing. I think that it doesn't matter what your religion, political views, music taste or favourite colours are....for goodness sakes, 'worship' them without Blackpool-esque Tackiness(Blackpool, England....think Vegas on a budget!)
Incidentally, my gran had a 2ft tall statue of the virgin Mary that stood in her hallway for years and years.......I used to say hello to it every time I entered her house for fear if I didn't, it would come alive at night and sneak into the bedroom.....I reckon I'm a catholic by proxy!

I'm using Firefox on a Mac and it looks good and loads fine for me.

I could live without the VM on a hat but I'm rather partial to the roses ;)

Oh, my. That hat would find its way "accidentally" into the bag for the Rescue Mission pretty damn quickly at my house.

Nice! You must have been dying when he said that! I didn't know that men ever thought about 'popping it out' with a bit of color. Now I'm getting jealous.

The best I got was husband who just now, 12 year after high school, think that maybe he owns too many ratty t-shirts and it might be time to possibly upgrade. (note all the qualifiers!)

No problems loading...

Er, as to the hat? Yeah. I'm not too sure about that. But then, it does seem a little sincere, doesn't it?

I am also not a big fan of the Jesus is my Homeboy shirts. I always want to ask, "Really? Is he reallllly your homeboy?" At least the picture on the shirt doesn't have him wearing that hat!

Thanks all! Glad there don't seem to be too many problems viewing the site.

As for the hat, I think I am going to conveniently misplace it while housecleaning...

Yes, your load takes me forever and ever to load. But, I am NOT on firefox, so maybe that's the problem?

And that hat is wrong for so many reasons and I'm not even Catholic. :) But, your husband's comment about wearing pink to pop out the color cracked me up! Men are soooo odd.

Does he really have a pink shirt?

Surprisingly, yes, he actually has two pink shirts! He has a pink polo shirt and a pink dress shirt from Lands End. I can't quite see either of those styles of shirts really going well with the VM hat...

I'm a huge fan of tacky kitch. It's terrible but it calls to me.

Forgive me.

No loading probs here.

Your hubby sounds like he has, er, an interesting fashion style. heehee.

That is SO funny that he loved the hat AND planned his wardrobe around making it "pop out." heehee.

You've. got. to. be. kidding. me. I would tell him wearing the hat is grounds for divorce.

I'm all tricked out on Firefox and I'm not having any trouble loading your blog.

I don't even think my husband owns a pink shirt. I'm with you on this one. Kitsch is funny in some ways, not others. And it's sad that I think of any picture of something religious adorning anything other than a wall within a frame as kitsch.

I do sometimes have problems with your page loading. It always comes up with all the graphics but it takes a long time to load. I just figured it was my computer. I use I/E.

I so agree! I have noticed a lot of the Hispanics here in Texas have weeping Virgin Mary tattoos on their forearms. Sure, it is great they are so religious, or whatever. But I tend to think that people who do that - paste the Virgin Mary on their body for all to see - are really not as devout as one would think. It's like they are just showing off about their religion, and that just doesn't seem very Christian. I dunno - maybe it's just tacky.

My mother in law has Virgin Marys and Jesuses all over her house. I have to say, it is rather creepy. I am very religious myself, but having all those saintly eyes looking at me every time I enter her house is somehow disconcerting.

Totally agree, though, gotta say, it's more the fugly that offends me than the religious content. Tack-AY.

My Catholic husband ground his teeth whenever people wore any sort of gear advertising their Christianity -- he called them the "Jesus hat crowd." I can only imagine what he would have said about a Virgin Mary hat. :) I like the image of your husband pondering what color shirt would go best with it, though!
