Get out your nursing bras. It's time for a virtual sit in!

By now you've probably heard that Facebook is requiring that women remove pictures of themselves breastfeeding because the pictures are "obscene".

Grr. Even writing that sentence makes me want to squirt some booby milk in the face of a Facebook executive.

Anyhoo, when I heard about this injustice the first thing I wanted to do was stage a huge mommyblogger boob-a-thon wherein people would post pictures of themselves breastfeeding and then all of the links would be sent to Facebook in protest. I figured the more boobage showing the better.

But then reality set in and I realized that, ironically, while I currently have time to breastfeed about 25 times a day, I really didn't have time to set up a mommyblogger boob-a-thon, let alone take a picture of myself breastfeeding.

So...I was so excited when I found out that there is a team of rebel lactivists who have set up this very thing - and in a much more impressive and professional way than I ever could. They are hosting the Great Virtual Breast Fest on October 10th at 11am. To participate in this virtual nurse-in, all you have to do is post a video of yourself breastfeeding at that time. Or, if you don't have video, you can send the lactivists a picture of yourself breastfeeding and they will include it in a video montage. If you didn't/don't breastfeed, you can simply write a post about why you support women's right to nourish their children whenever and whatever and in whatever manner they wish. Click on the button above for more information.

Facebook truly does suck....and so does the Airline who kicked a woman off their plane for breastfeeding her child and refusing to cover up with the blanket they thrust at her!!!

Sheesh, since when did feeding a baby become an 'obscene' thing to do?????

I breast fed Gozar for a month (stopped because he was a hungry wee monster and wasn't getting enough nourishment from me) and I swear that although I wasn't able to breastfeed in public as I couldn't leave the house at the time...if I had, and someone had told me to stop because it was obscene..........there's a whole lotta swear words I would have used followed up by asking the person if they were a bottle fed child because quite obviously they were jealous!!!!!!

I support the right to both breast feed and bottle feed your child. I support the right to do it anytime, anywhere, any how your child needs it and it horrify's me that this world is becoming so 'tight-assed' and hypocritical that they will scream 'it's an obscenity' at a woman feedin her child by breast, but will then go on to watch sex scenes or scenes of nudity without so much as a murmur!!!!

Sorry for the rather long comment....should go and comment on the site you linked to...lol....hope you and the family are all well.
xx

Hear, hear! I went and posted more breastfeeding over at my place. I never wanted, as Bill Maher so ignorantly suggested, to be the center of attention. This whole thing though, makes me want to make the wonders of breastfeeding the center of attention.

Great post!

There is also a feed-in going on in many cities, and it makes me sad that I am between nursing babies right now. (yes, i'm one of THOSE women.)

I think I will repost my ode to the boob.

I just don't get all the hoopla over breast feeding. IMO a woman nursing her child shows a lot LESS boob than some of the top's or bikini bra's that are worn out in public but that's perfectly acceptable? If breast milk wasn't better for a baby you wouldn't have so many formula manufacturer's trying to match the composition of breast milk. Really it's just time for the gutter minded people to grow up and quit acting so sophomoric.

oooh, terrible things run through my head... I didn't get to breast feed my daughter very long, not that I didn't try.

All I can think is that the AAP really needs to step up and defend the mother's right to public breastfeeding. It is great that we can all do something, but as the medical professionals putting their stamp of approval on nursing, they should do a bit more to protect those right.

This is a great idea!

Where is the offense in a woman feeding her baby?

This is simply outrageous. There's nothing wrong with those photos. It's even a good way of promoting breastfeeding to encourage more moms to breastfeed.

It only shows that many still don't understand the importance of breastfeeding. These protests against public breastfeeding have to stop.
